How safe is the Lake Merritt area of Oakland?

I saw an apartment at Brooklyn and Athol that I really like, but I'm wondering about the neighborhood. I've lived on the other side of the Bay for a while and have heard stories about Oakland, but I've also heard that some parts are really nice. Is this area one of the good ones?
