Can someone explain to me the Uefa Euro 2008?

All i know is that there are European Teams all fighting for the Trophy of best European Team, and that this tournament goes every 4 years. I dont understand the standings or how you get eliminated or anything. Im very interested in this sport now after I saw my first full game yesterday when Turkey faced Czech Republic. Which was a great match by the way
